Construction continues to be one of the most male-dominated industries in Australia, with only 12% representation of women across the sector and only 2% in trade roles. Daracon Group, one of the Hunter’s largest family owned and operated civil construction companies, has announced its support for the 'Hard Work Knows No Gender' campaign by the NSW Government.
This campaign, supports industry-driven diversity and workforce development solutions, recognising that industry needs to be at the centre of initiatives aimed to improve gender diversity in the construction sector.
"We are proud to align ourselves with the NSW Government's 'Hard Work Knows No Gender' campaign," said Emma Morson, Daracon Senior HR Specialist – Compliance, Diversity and Inclusion. "At Daracon, we are an equal employment supporter and are aiming to pave a way for women in construction, engineering and environmental sciences."
"As a company operating in a traditionally male-dominated industry, we understand the importance of creating pathways for women to excel and thrive," said Ms Morson. "We are proud members The National Association of Women In Construction (NAWIC), an organisation which welcomes women in construction, and their allies, from all walks of life, cultures, ages and career stages,” she said.
“Our membership with NAWIC and the Civil Contractors Federation NSW offers our team members, both male and female, the opportunity to participate in mentoring programs focussed on encouraging more women to join and remain in the civil industry,” said Ms Morson.
“That is why supporting the 'Hard Work Knows No Gender' campaign is so important to us, as it ensures that we are supporting women in construction through workforce development programs, plus encourages everyone on site to challenge any stigmas which might still be found within our industry,” said Ms Morson.
Toolbox talks and supporting posters are being rolled out across Daracon Group sites to share the ‘Hard Work Knows No Gender’ campaign message that construction is about people working together to get the job done.
