Summary

Designed as Australia’s most ‘advanced and innovative’ zoos, Daracon worked across over 16 hectares of Western Sydney Zoo to construct the bulk earthworks, parking, pathways, utility installations and construction of animal enclosures including detailed excavation, earth moundings, retaining walls, shotcrete walls and concrete moats.

Scope of Work

  • Bulk earthworks – 29,000m3 cut, 36,000m3 fill
  • Detailed excavation including excavation of tiered elephant pools and animal exhibits
  • Concrete works including moat wall shotcreting, footpaths, spillway slabs, dish drain and kerb and gutter
  • Stormwater drainage installation including both RCP and PVC-U pipes and catchment headwall installation
  • Service installation including electrical, communications, sewer, potable water and fire hydrants
  • Retaining walls including concrete block walls, log walls and reinforced earth walls
  • Pavements for car parks and access roads including placement of structural layers and asphalt
  • Bio-retention basins including installation of water catchment basins with filtration media
  • Turf carpark
  • Erosion and scour protection including the installation of Reno mattress and gabion baskets at basin outlets, installation of grass swales and headwall scour rock
  • Reinforced Backfilling of Spantech Building – including sandstone block retaining walls and engineered fill

Achievements

  • Ensuring productivity and access is maximised through coordination of multiple trades on-site
  • Planning critical works to allow other trades to complete sequential items and achieve desired handover deadlines
  • Allowing challenging and unique designs to be achieved on time and to the allocated budget by creating methodologies that supported this goal
  • Due to revised designs and ideas, we successfully adjusted work programs and resources to cater to these additional scope items
  • Being flexible with media/community events held on-site for marketing purposes
  • Providing engineered solutions to complex concept designs, considering construction restrictions and desired aesthetics by client.
