Daracon Group Cadet Secures Finalist Nod at 2025 NAWIC NSW Excellence Awards

Finalists for the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) NSW 2025 Excellence Awards have been announced, with Daracon Group Cadet Amilija Drazina being listed as a finalist in the Ghella University Scholarship category.

The NAWIC NSW Excellence Awards celebrate and shine a spotlight on the remarkable achievements of women, businesses and allies who are redefining and shaping the future of construction. These awards represent and recognise the progress and inclusivity in the dynamic world of construction.

Amilija joined Daracon in 2024 through the Daracon Casual Labour Pool, where she gained hands-on experience working on the Hexham Straight Widening Project, before transitioning to a Cadet role. Now in her second year, Amilija is balancing work and study as an undergraduate, while actively contributing to a range of civil construction projects across the Hunter.

Encouraged in High School by her Dad—who had a career in construction—and her Engineering Teacher, Amilija pursued an Engineering path at the University of Newcastle. Once working on site, with she quickly recognised the critical role surveying plays in the construction process. This inspired her to expand her studies, and she is now completing a double degree in Engineering and Surveying.

Amilija has also been supported by her colleagues since joining Daracon as a Labourer, with adjustments being made to support her hearing impairment. Daracon arranged a workplace assessment with an Audiologist to help her adapt to the noisy work environment. She now uses a rechargeable microphone that connects to her hearing aids, allowing colleagues to clip it on during conversations so she can hear clearly. Her phone also connects to her hearing aids, making communication easier.

"My colleagues have been incredibly supportive—they’ve embraced using the microphone and always make sure to face me when speaking, which really helps. I’ve been open about my hearing loss, and working through these solutions together has been a positive experience all-round," said Amilija.

Her journey not only reflects the importance of building inclusive and diverse workplaces but also highlights the strong support for women within the construction sector.”

“Amilija has not only pushed boundaries for herself, but she’s also approached every challenge with determination, a positive attitude and strong work ethic. This recognition is well deserved for someone as dedicated and resilient as he is,” said Emma.

Winners of the NAWIC NSW 2025 Awards for Excellence will be announced at the ICC Sydney on 13 November, 2025.
